Nonpoliticians needed in office

In recent letters to the editor, several writers have touted Rep. Thomas Reynolds and what he has achieved in this area.

One praised his efforts for a young child in need of surgery. Some would argue that it's always a campaign attention-getter used by many that, handled discreetly, might be more classy.

Reynolds feels that all politics are local. If you "bring home the bacon," you're as good as reelected, especially in our gerrymandered district. I wouldn't take issue with those who agree with that philosophy, for a representative's role is eternally debated.

For me, at this time in our nation's history, there are more overriding issues. The congressman is a purveyor and supporter of this administration and Congress that has legislated little,

and achieved nothing that could be construed as making our republic safer or more solvent, our environment cleaner, our government more disaster responsive, our privacy rights more secure, or the education of our children better. He continues to support the first pre-emptive war in our history. He supports this cabal whose egos are too large to admit the mistakes that are tearing this country apart.

An administration who in 2000 talked only of "uniting," has been

a haven for religious intolerants, artificial superpatriots, chicken hawks who mock those who actually did defend us in war, experts in the art of meaningless slogans for the purpose of dividing, and those who demean the achievements of the party that inspired Social Security, Medicare and civil rights. Time for a nonpolitician? Perhaps the time is now.
