+ RIDE ALONG - On Friday night, Amherst Police Officer Timothy Carney was gracious enough to take me on a ride along with him during his 3:3011:30 p.m. shift. I have found during my various assignments with the Bee Group Newspapers that taking part in a ride along is very beneficial in learning about the community. There isn't much to report from the evening, but one call did cause some unnecessary disruption. Juveniles fighting over a sweatshirt and purse involved a girl calling 911 and screaming about her purse. The phone call was dropped, and she never called back. Unable to contact the young girl, dispatchers sent police to investigate. While police searched the street linked to the phone call, the juveniles had moved on with their activities, not understanding the disruption they caused. Both parties were located and advised with regard to their actions.

UNDERCOVER - While working at the Bee Newspapers for the past three years, one question is asked of me time and time again: Are you a student? Without fail, when I visit a school I am asked for my hall pass or when at meetings, if my government class sheet should be signed. I'm sure many of you are reading this and saying, "Don't complain that you look young." But I find it humorous that it has been seven years since I graduated from Iroquois High School, and I am still being mistaken for a student. It happened again this school year. When I

approached a member of the Board of Education at a recent meeting, I was asked if I needed my paper signed for a class. I always make sure to laugh and explain who I am.
