Motivated East golfers ready to make impact
by PATRICK J. NAGY Reporter

An experienced Williamsville East team is ready for this fall's golf season.

"We were 2-8 (two years ago), then 5-5 (last year), now these guys expect to be good," said East head coach Dave Delisanti. "They've been talking about 'let's take one match at a time'."

With no seniors on last year's squad, East is loaded with returning talent (11 returning players) which should push ECIC North powerhouses Clarence and Williamsville North.

Delisanti's starting four is junior Justin Cardon followed by seniors Kyle Smith, Andrew Ross, and Joe LaPoint. All have been on the team since they were freshmen. Smith and Ross, who have started since freshman year, are captains and were alternates for sectionals; Cardon is an assistant captain.

Cardon, who represented Section VI at the New York State Public High School Athletic Association Championships in June, is averaging a 36 stroke average. Delisanti said Cardon has done well over the summer at interclub and Junior PGA events and has a good short game. Smith took defending ECIC scoring champion Jake Katz of North to two playoff holes at last year's Williamsville Cup, which East won as a team. Delisanti said LaPoint has improved his all-around game, especially the mental aspect of focusing and course management.

Seniors David Taubman, junior Adam Burtch, senior David Kausch, and juniors David Rundell, Josh DiMarco and Eric Burtch are battling for the fifth through eighth starting position. All have played since freshman year.

Senior Will Dixon also returns.

Junior Mark Chaskes, freshman Andrew Legarreta and eighth graders Sean Mahon and Bill Gaffney are new to the team.

Delsanti said his team is ready to go.

"They're really excited," said Delisanti. "They think they can play really well. (Now) they just have to go out there and (do it)."

The Tigers haven't had success in boys golf in recent years but it's not for lack of effort or talent.

"We're in the toughest division so probably out of 24 ECIC teams, we're somewhere between eight and nine. Unfortunately we have four teams in our division that are in the top five," said Amherst head coach Joe Marszalek.

Marszalek returns a young team.

"We're on the young end," he said. "I do have five seniors of which three will start in the lineup for us. Then I will be starting mostly freshmen and sophomores."

Senior Alex Pontikos is the team's No. 1. Seniors Matt Kallen and Alex Kuttesch and junior Mike Hong, will see time in the starting lineup. Hong who wasn't even in the team's starting top eight, might play at No. 3 or 4, Marszalek said.

Marszalek said he is looking for his team to play at a high level early to keep them competitive with everyone else in the league.

"Other than that, we have a bunch of hard working kids that I think will improve and hopefully take advantage of the good courses and get themselves into the ECIC Tournament and do well," he added.
