Out of the Past 125 Years Ago Sept. 1, 1881 Yesterday about one o'clock P.M., the village fire bells rang out an alarm and soon all was excitement. The house owned by John Horey on Mill Street was on fire. The fire company was aided by the citizens and did all in their power. They were unable to save Mr. Horey's house and barn owing the extreme dryness but prevented the flames from spreading to neighboring buildings. A large party was given on Friday of last week by Mr. and Mrs. Arthur H. Moulton at their residence honor of Mr. Moulton's eightieth birthday. An auction will be held on Saturday, Sept. 17 near the Swormville Hotel featuring a new frame house, good barn, a new paint shop, outbuildings and four acres of land. Also about 40,000 bricks. The seller is Geo. Neubecker. Burdocks and other weeds are especially noticeable on some of our streets. The Streets Commissioner should give this his immediate attention. Mr. Francis Bagard, whose fine farm lies on the south side of Ellicott Creek near the Sweet Home bridge, passed the time at the offices of The Bee yesterday. Longnecker had the contract for laying a new floor and Mr. Frederick Brelos that of repairing the interior. Mr. M.J. Hoffman has placed a new furnace and the building hereafter will be warmed by hot water. H.B. Long was elected president of the Williamsville Board of Education. 75 Years Ago Sept. 3, 1931 Schools will re-open next Tuesday, September 8. is very essential that pupils start school on the first day and keep a steady attendance. The state department at Albany recognizes only several legitimate excuses for tardiness and absence: sickness of the child, death in the family; and weather conditions which make it unsafe for the child to attend school. The refreshment stand owned by Ray Vowinkle, located on Glen Avenue, was broken into on Saturday night. $15 was taken. The Park School Riding Academy will be opened Saturday, September fifth. A new world's record in horse pulling was established Wednesday at the Ohio State Fair by Amherst horses - the prize animals of John Adrian. 50 Years Ago Aug. 30, 1956 An inter-town highway which would be important to the future development of the north section of Amherst, has been proposed by the Amherst Planning Board. The plan involves the extension of Maple Road, connecting with Brighton Road in Tonawanda and Greiner Road in Clarence. Valentine Leising, 62, of Williamsville, suffered a broken arm when his stalled car was struck by a vehicle on Clarence Center Road near Heise Road last Sunday evening. 25 Years Ago Sept. 2, 1981 Now that the exterior of the Village Meeting House has been painted, work can start on restoring three of the building's stained glass windows, said Gartley Weller of the Williamsville Historical Society. Joan Jennings Scalfani has been appointed executive director of Episcopal Charities of Western New York. Loyal J. Murphy, 84, first president of the Amherst Symphony Orchestra Association, died Sunday, Aug. 30, 1981. |
