Johnson qualifies for world amateur championship

Dennis Johnson of Williamsville is one of 3,800 golfers expected to participate in the 2006 PGA Tour Superstore World Amateur Handicap Championship in Myrtle Beach, S.C. held from Aug. 28 to Sept. 1.

The 3,800 golfers will come from all 50 states and 24 countries to compete for the title of "World's Amateur Golf Champion."

The PGA Tour Superstore World Amateur Handicap Championship, the world's largest single-site golf tournament, is a 72-hole tournament played on 55 Myrtle Beach area golf courses each August. It is open to any amateur golfer with a verified United States Golf Association handicap or the foreign equivalent for international players.

Players are flighted according to their handicap with more than 100 golfers playing in each of the tournament's approximate 39 flights. At the conclusion of the four rounds, flight winners advance to the 18-hole championship playoff at the renowned Dunes Golf and Beach Club on Sept. 1.
