Tina Miller, 14, became the youngest female in history to win the Ladies City Open Clay Court singles title.
Miller, a freshman this fall at Williamsville North High School, defeated Lancaster soon-to-be-senior Jennifer Ickowski, 6-2, 6-0, in the finals held Aug. 15 at the Buffalo Racquet Club.
As a seventh grader, Miller was the youngest girl to ever win an ECIC singles title and repeated last year as champion, capping an undefeated dual match record at first singles. Miller's parents, Todd and Debbie, are former City Open singles champions.
In the men's final, Amherst senior Ari Binder was defeated 6-3, 6-2, by Sherif Zaher, the newly appointed head coach at the University at Buffalo. In the semifinals, Binder bested MUNY champ Ken White, 6-4, 6-7, 7-5, in a match lasting nearly four hours.
Miller, Ickowski, and Binder train at Amherst Hills Tennis Club. Zaher, in addition to his duties at UB, will be a part time coach at the club, working with the top level junior players.
