Police remind residents to lock houses A rash of residential burglaries has Amherst police warning residents to lock their houses and garage doors, even during the day. "We need to remind residents they need to lock up, even if they are gone during broad daylight for a couple of hours," Capt. Timothy Green said. "People are out walking; you don't want to make it easy for somebody." He said the residents are allowing opportunist thieves to get away by not locking doors. This past weekend four burglaries were reported to the Amherst police; three took place during the day. On Friday, a Lehn Springs Drive resident reported that someone entered the house during the daytime into evening hours. Police think the suspect entered through the garage and then an unlocked door to the house. A computer, personal identification papers, a wallet, credit cards and $150 in cash were taken. A Burroughs Drive resident was the victim of a Saturday daytime burglary. Someone reportedly entered the back door through the garage and stole a computer. Two burglaries took place on Sunday, the first at Vine Lane, where it is unknown exactly when and how the suspect got in. Family members were reportedly in and out all day. Jewelry valued at $1,300 and sneakers were taken. No signs of forced entry were found. A burglary on Jasmine Court took place overnight Sunday. The owners heard a door open and found an unlocked car had been ransacked and change was taken. Also, pop and beer were stolen from the unlocked garage. Anyone with information should call, 689-1311. |
