West Nile virus found in Amherst

Two mosquito pools in Amherst tested positive for the West Nile virus, Erie County Health Commissioner Anthony J. Billittier IV said.

The pools, located at Harlem Road and Kensington Avenue, and Transit and Klein roads, are in addition to a crow also testing positive. The crow was found in South Buffalo.

"Erie County residents need to take precautions to avoid mosquito bites during outdoor activities," Billittier said. "The species of mosquitoes identified are also prolific human biters, adding to the need for caution."

The county, which has been trapping, found an increase in the number of mosquitoes during the past two weeks.

The New York State Department of Health found the virus after testing the two pools.

"Residents should continue to enjoy activities in parks and other outdoor settings, using precautions to protect themselves from mosquitoes. Wear long pants and long sleeve shirts especially during evening hours," Billittier said. "A mosquito repellant containing at least 25 percent DEET (diethyl-m-toluamide), 10 percent for children, is also recommended."

A mosquito surveillance program will continue through Erie County and will be larviciding storm sewer receivers and other standing water to reduce the total number of mosquitoes. The efforts will continue until the first frost.

In response to as many as six locations being found in Town, Supervisor Satish Mohan said the Town will continue to treat sewers and pools of water.
