Marjorie E. Fisher, 87, the first librarian at the Eggertsville-Snyder Branch library, and founder of three libraries in the Hope School District of Santa Barbara, Calif., died Monday, June 26, 2006.
Born Marjorie Epes in Susquehanna, Pa., she moved with her parents to Kenmore in the early 1920s. She attended Washington Elementary School, one block from her home. She graduated from Kenmore High School.
Mrs. Fisher was an avid swimmer and lifelong golfer, held a pilot's license, was well read and widely traveled. She received a bachelor's degree from Duke University and a degree in library science from the University of Southern California. In 1943, she became a Navy Ensign (WAVE). She was honorably discharged from inactive duty in 1954.
Her marriage in 1952 to Buffalo architect Allan McTaggart ended in divorce. She remarried in 1964 to California businessman and author Peter Fisher.
An inter-loan librarian during the early years of the
federated" Erie County library system, Mrs. Fisher was selected to head the first county-operated branch library outside of Buffalo, Eggerstsville-Snyder. She was presented at its dedication in 1951.
Mrs. Fisher also spent 15 years as a school librarian in Santa Barbara, retiring in 1976. She continued to volunteer at one of the libraries she had created there. In 2005, she was still reading aloud to large groups of toddlers and kindergartners.
Mrs. Fisher is survived by a daughter, Leslie McTaggart of Hawaii; a brother, C. Morgan Epes of Buffalo; and several grandchildren.
A Service of Celebration was held Monday, July 3 at Valle Verde Retirement Community, Santa Barbara, Calif.
