Man arrested after allegedly following girls

A tense moment for two girls ended in the arrest of a man on Evans Street and Sheridan Drive early Thursday.

Assistant Police Chief John Askey said two girls left Cafe Aroma on Main Street in the Village of Williamsville around midnight. As they walked down Main Street they noticed that a man in a red GEO Tracker was following them.

According to the police report, the man would park in a lot every time the girls stopped. Using a cell phone, the girls called police to report that they were concerned about a suspicious car.

Police located the vehicle, which was driven by Garrett H. Scheg, 35, of Clarence, at Sheridan Drive and Evans Street.

He was charged with criminal possession of an illegal substance, for allegedly having a crack pipe with residue on it, and fourth-degree stalking.

In other police business, Amherst police are continuing an investigation into a rash of construction site robberies reported throughout Western New York.

The most recent town case was reported on Aug. 9. East Amherst Plumbing reported that sometime between Aug. 4 and 7, $1,600 worth of copper piping was taken from a construction site on Brompton Road.

According to Askey, there was no damage reported to the lock nor the trailer where the piping was stored. He said burglaries of metals from construction sites are increasing because of the valuable metals.
