For the kids who commit quality-of-life crimes, when the police pick them up for a violation, have the police hold them and charge the parents for the overtime the police make. Once the money comes out of the parents' pocket, the parents will be more responsible for their kids. If not, it's ridiculous that the police department has to be a babysitting service and that residents have to be tormented by irresponsible children from irresponsible p a re n t s . .I want to make sure that someone has given a call to state their gratitude that the airport runway work was completed on time. As of Aug. 1, all the neighborhoods in Amherst complaining are peaceful. I think it deserves a comment in your paper that, yes, the work was finished on time, and that's really a month early of the original plan. I am a resident, and I greatly appreciate it! .It's 3 p.m. Sunday and after working in the yard all weekend, there are three large cans of yard waste, one can of garbage and the recycling bin. It's time to shower and go out for dinner. Wait! It's only 3 p.m. and I can't put the cans out until 6 p.m. I'll be cleaned up and leaving to go by that time, so now I have to put them out when I get back. I probably should change my clothes again, or I could get up at 5 a.m., because they pickup at 6 a.m. No way do I approve of putting it out before Sunday, and anyone who does should receive a summons. Maybe the enforcement person could work a couple of weeks on a Saturday or Sunday and then let the judge decide what the penalty should be. .Thank you to the Boy Scout troop that worked on the island on my street, Lamont. They did a beautification project on the island at Lamont, Rosedale and Gresham and it looks absolutely beautiful. .I hope before Supervisor Mohan submits his budget cuts for next year, he takes into consideration why people live in the Town of Amherst. If low taxes were the main consideration, I wouldn't live in Amherst. I live in Amherst because I want to live in Amherst; I feel safe here, my children received a wonderful education, the services are excellent and the parks system is superior. .For all the people who say the reason the town is so safe is because of its affluent residents, you are so wrong. The police department patrols and makes us safe every day, and there's no reason to cut the police department. .Come on, folks, why don't we let Satish Mohan do his job? He was elected to do a job; he is attempting to do his job. If he didn't follow his campaign promises, you'd be all over him for that. He is trying to change things for the better. We are all taxpayers, and we are all in this together. If taxes increase, does your raise mean anything? .After reading the police blotter in The Amherst Bee, we don't need more policemen, we need more psychiatrists! .If Amherst town employees would realize they are employees and work with the supervisor and board, and Kindel, Ward and O'Loughlin would realize they were elected by the people to work for the town (not against the town) and try to make the town a better place to live, and if the Amherst Police Department would enforce the laws of the town and state laws from violations, misdemeanors and felonies, this would be a much better town! I was told by one officer that they could make the town a better place if there were three more officers. If you're not going to enforce the laws now, what good are three more officers going to do? Why should part-time town board members make $55,000 a year, when I'm a state employee and make $10,000 less than they do? .Wake up, America! This news of the Alaskan oil pipeline having corrosive spots and leaks is just another gimmick to raise gasoline prices. What is our lame-duck President doing about it? Nothing; he's on vacation, just like the rest of the federal government. Let's boycott all gasoline stations posting a $3.15 per gallon sign. .I commend Supervisor Mohan; I think his attention to detail and scrutinizing such issues as the addition of police officers is exactly what we need. That's why he was elected, because of his promise to do exactly this! I think board members are afraid Dr. Mohan will see some oil coming to the surface of the water and some things revealed. Leave Mohan alone! Regarding the permit issue, I think people are digging up dirt to get him out of office. They should be ashamed of themselves! Keep up the good work, Dr. Mohan! You have our suppor t. .What is the difference if Dr. Mohan won by a mandate or a landslide or overwhelmingly? The fact is, he won, and that's the important thing. .I am a long-time resident of Williamsville and voted for Satish. I feel the people who believe in the friends and family plan need to grow up and look forward to the future, so Buffalo in general can get out of its slump. .Thank goodness that Satish Mohan's usual shoot-from-the-hip panic call to the state comptroller for a control board was not heeded and, in fact, the response from the comptroller was that Amherst is doing very well, thank you. Thank goodness that the comptroller does his research and his homework. Satish should be ashamed of himself for jeopardizing the town's finances by irresponsibly calling for a control board. Satish doesn't even realize that the staffing alone of the control board would be well over $1 million per year, and that's not even needed. What is needed are three police hires. |
