Knab nabs pie honors, awards announced

Amidst the heat wave that settled in the region, food lovers gathered at the 18th annual Taste of Williamsville on Aug. 1 to "savor the flavor."
Restaurants took over Island Park and offered samples of their menu items for attendees and judges alike.
Winners from the Taste of Williamsville were: Rookie of the Year - Hirsch's baby back ribs; Chairman's Choice Award - Sorrentino's tomato tortellini soup; Best Food Booth: Individual Best Dish - Eagle House's chicken mancini penne; People's Choice
Booth: All Over Menu - Creekview, whose menu included pulled pork and cheddar wrap, chipotle popcorn shrimp and New England clam chowder.
Other winners were: Best Dessert Booth: In Dessert Gazebo - Village Dessert's chocolate dipped
pineapple macaroon; Best Dessert Booth: by Individual
Restaurant - Applebee's raspberry cheesecake; Best Theme - Sweet Jenny's beach decor; and Honorable Mention - Kabob & Curry's chicken makhni with rice.
Judges also awarded recognition to: Mayor's Award - Great Northern Pizza Kitchen; Supervisor's Award - Protocol Restaurant's horseradish-crusted salmon; Best Meat Item - Lebro's penne pasta with julienne steak; Best Seafood Item - Brennan's Bowery Bar's seafood sabre kabob; and Best Vegetarian Food - Bing's bruschetta.
In the pie-baking contest, Judy Knab's peach raspberry submission was chosen best out of 20 entries. Knab was also the winner two years ago. She was awarded a gift certificate to the Creekview Restaurant.
Other pie category winners were: Most Original Pie - Kellie Sonnenfeld's pumpkin caramel mousse pie and honorable mention to Rick Yaeger's apple bourbon caramel pie; Fruit Pie - Eric Berg's peach raspberry pie and honorable mention to Suzanne Seitz's strawberry rhubarb pie; Best Presentation - Catherine Jasinski's cherry blueberry flag pie and honorable mention to Susan Calandra's peach pie; and Best Crust - Amy Carl's caramel apple pie and honorable mention to Carol Van Order's apple praline pie.
Winner of the Taste of Williamsville drawing was Vince Vullo, who was the recipient of a gift certificate to the Eagle
