ECC names interim president
      The Erie Community College Board of Trustees appointed William Reuter to interim president of the college at its meeting on Nov. 29. The appointment will become effective Jan. 1 pending approval by the State University of New York Board of Trustees. He will serve as interim president until the next president of the college is named.

Williamsville Suburban Nursing recommended for closure
      Last week the Commission on Health Care Facilities in the 21st Century released its recommendations for health care facilities to downsize or close throughout New York State. Included in the list of closures was the Williamsville Suburban Nursing facility located at 193 S. Union Road.

Registration open for Citizen Police Academy
      The Amherst Police Department will be offering a spring session of its Citizen Police Academy beginning Feb. 13. The CPA is a 13-week program developed for the purpose of educating the general public on the workings of the police department. Participants will receive an overview on all departments from dispatch to patrol.

      Amherst Chamber of Commerce will join with Eastern Hills Mall and Dave & Buster's Sports Cafe in hosting its annual Holiday Business Afterhours from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 12 in Dave & Buster's Sports Cafe in the mall. The event will feature a trip to the Bahamas. Entry forms will only be accepted during the event between 5 and 6 p.m.

Pupil stabs staff member with pencil
      Amherst police responded to Lynde School on Main Street at 11:30 a.m. Thursday after a pupil stabbed a staff member with a sharpened pencil. The 13-year-old female suspect reportedly injured the employee who had intervened in an altercation that arose between another staff member and the suspect after the pupil became disruptive.

Support group started at Millard Fillmore Suburban
      Millard Fillmore Suburban Hospital has started "Helpers Along the Way," a monthly bereavement support group for people who have lost a loved one. The group was established to provide emotional support, help eliminate feelings of isolation, and encourage people to not only seek help but to provide it.

Eggertsville, Snyder fire districts to hold elections
      Two of the Town of Amherst fire districts have contested races for commissioner positions in an election on Tuesday, Dec. 12. Eggertsville Fire District will hold voting from 4 to 9 p.m. at the fire station, 1880 Eggert Road. Only registered voters who reside within the Eggertsville Fire District are allowed to vote.

      The Main-Transit Fire Department of Amherst has elected its officers for 2007. Elected president was James Lawida. Also elected were Vice-President Andrew Yambor, Secretary Richard Chudy, Treasurer Harry Schick, Financial Secretary Carol Jackson and Sergeant At Arms Brian Rusin.

Man arrested after crashing stolen car
      Amherst police have arrested a man during Monday's snowfall who faces several charges after leading police on a car chase. Kenneth D. Longmire, 40, of Niagara Falls was arrested Monday on Interstate 290 after leading police on a chase that started at the Boulevard Mall. Initially, police were called about Longmire because he was a suspect in a larceny case from the JC Penney Department Store.

Vision work focuses on business district
      The Community Plan Committee met with David E. Versel of Devonomics on Nov. 26 to discuss the scope of work yet to be done for the 20/20 vision of the Village of Williamsville. Devonomics was one of the consulting firms hired by the village to develop a 20-year vision plan for Williamsville. Versel will focus on the Main Street business district.

Gift Drive for WNY Seniors underway
      Gifts for the Greatest Generation kicked off the third annual gift drive aimed at Western New York seniors. Unwrapped gifts will be donated to elderly shut-ins. The mission of Gifts for the Greatest Generation since its inception in 2003 has been to "bring the joy of the holiday season to WNY shut-ins.

Trends show depression, abuse cases increase during holidays
      Many organizations are reaching out to residents who may be having a hard time dealing with depression or addictions during the holiday season. Matthew G. Smith, foundation director and community awareness director of WNY United Against Drug and Alcohol Abuse Inc., said the organization is reaching out to adults, reminding them that alcohol and drugs shouldn't be the center of their celebrating.

      Rev. Jerre Feagin, who served as a hospice chaplain for 10 years, collaborated a list of tips for coping with grief and loss during the holidays. "The December holidays are traditionally a joyous and festive time of the year," Feagin said. "But for those who have lost a loved one, no matter how long ago, these days can be a bittersweet time when difficult feelings may surface.

Roswell Park opens Chemotherapy and Oncology Center in Amherst
      Faced with an increasing demand for chemotherapy and infusion services and to help meet the needs of cancer patients, Roswell Park Cancer Institute opened the Amherst Center at 100 College Park, between Main Street and Wehrle Drive, in Amherst. The new Center will operate chemotherapy and oncology clinics Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Village cleanup process continues
      The Federal Emergency Management Agency has estimated Village of Williamsville damage from the October storm to be approximately $1 million. Village officials are continually working on FEMA documentation and reimbursement, Mayor Mary Lowther said.
