chief

More
than half of his life has been spent as a member of the Amherst Police
Department, but that will end on July 9 when Chief John Moslow, 56,
retires.
"My last year reaches my anniversary for having served as chief for eight
years," Moslow said after announcing his decision to the town on
Wednesday.
He was hired on Jan. 9, 1975 as a police officer, then was promoted
through the ranks during his more than 32 years of service. Moslow's assignments
included patrol lieutenant, captain of the traffic division, and administrative
captain for former Chief John
Askey.
Moslow was promoted to chief on July 9, 1999.
In making
this decision, Moslow said he has thought about it for some time as it was not
an easy one for
him.
"When you
reach the 30-year plateau it crosses everyone's mind. It was a difficult
decision to make; serving the Town of Amherst and the police department as been
my life's work," he
said.
Moslow
added he placed term limits on himself, saying he would serve two terms, eight
years, as chief. He said the national average term for a chief is five
years.
"I've
enjoyed it," he
said.
The Amherst Town Board will decide the next chief. Moslow said a civil service
list of candidates is already in place from which the new chief will be
chosen.
