Sharks’ defense dominates late in MMA title victory
      Sacred Heart’s defense came to play when it counted the most. Trailing 40-37, the Sharks dominated the boards and outscored Nichols, 15-2, in the fourth quarter to post a 53-42 comeback victory for the Monsignor Martin Association title Sunday at Daemen College. It was Sacred Heart’s first MMA title since 2006.

      Tricia Kent of Williamsville South rolled a 1,204 to help the Section VI girls bowling all-star team place third at the state meet Sunday at Mardi Bob Lanes in Poughkeepsie. She bowled games of 194, 188, 222, 195, 201 and 204. Her total was second on the Section VI team.

Lady Spartans fall behind against Lockport
      Williamsville North’s bid for its first sectional championship in girls basketball fell short. The third-seed Lady Spartans fell to top-seeded Lockport by 47-40 in the Section VI Class AA championship last Saturday at Erie Community College’s Burt Flickinger Athletic Center. It was Lockport’s second straight sectional title.

Intensity plays role in North’s semifinal win
      Williamsville North brought the intensity and with it, a trip to the Section VI Class AA final. The Lady Spartans built a big first-quarter lead and held off an Orchard Park first-half rally with a strong second half to pick up its ninth straight win, a 57-41 victory in a Class AA semifinal Tuesday, March 2, at Williamsville East High School.

North hockey loses state quarterfinal heartbreaker
      Williamsville North’s first trip to the state playoffs in three years ended in heartbreak. The Spartans (17-3-4) outshot Section I’s Suffern, 34-26, but lost to them, 3-2, in overtime in a Division I state quarterfinal last Saturday night at Sport-O-Rama Ice Rink in Monsey, about 10 miles northwest of New York City.

Plattsburgh ends Amherst’s miracle season
      Amherst’s unbelievable run in boys ice hockey is over. The Tigers lost to Section VII’s Plattsburgh, 2-1, in a Division II state quarterfinal last Saturday at Ameri-Can North Sports Centre. It was Amherst’s first trip to a state quarterfinal.

Audubon Golf Club announces 2010 board of directors, committee chairs
      The Audubon Golf Club has announced the election of officers for the 2010 golf season. Amherst resident Pete Mellen has been elected president. Mellen is assistant vice president in risk management at M&T Bank. John Kielich of Williamsville was elected vice president. Kielich is an electrical mechanic for 3M.

Baseball clinic for boys 8-16 slated
     St. Paul’s will be holding a baseball clinic for boys ages 8-16 from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday, March 14 or Sunday, March 28 at New Era Park, 3950 Broadway in Depew. These clinics, which cost $15 per session or $25 for both, will focus primarily on hitting and fielding.       The Amherst Central girls basketball team had to be experiencing a little déjà vu in winning the Section VI Class A-2 title. For the second year in a row, the Lady Tigers upset top-seed Pioneer for the championship after losing to them twice during the regular season.

Grand Island shuts down Amherst in Class A final
      Grand Island put the cliché defense wins championships to work Saturday. The Lady Vikings (17-5) held Amherst to 30 points in a 56-30 rout in the Section VI Class A girls basketball final last Saturday at Erie Community College’s Burt Flickinger Athletic Center. It was a rematch of last year’s Class A final won by Amherst.

GI stops East in A-1 final
      A poor shooting day, along with a great defensive effort by Grand Island, ended Williamsville East’s season in the Section VI Class A-1 girls basketball final last Wednesday at Erie Community College’s Burt Flickinger Athletic Center. East scored more points in the first quarter (15) than they did for the rest of the game (13) in a 42-27 defeat.

      Christian Central Academy’s varsity boys basketball team won its second straight Independent Athletic Conference championship with a 66-49 win over the Stanley G. Falk School Feb. 27 at Niagara County Community College. Strong defense by both teams resulted in a 22-22 tie at halftime.

East’s Allen takes third in 300, 600
      Kala Allen surprised herself at Saturday’s state indoor track meet at Cornell University. The Williamsville East sophomore placed third in the 600-meter run in a season-best time of 1:36.60 and third in the 300-meter run in 40.60. Heading into the meet, Allen was ranked eighth in the 300 and 23rd in the 600.

      Alex Petrie, a Williamsville South graduate, combined with Tom Tucker to shoot 1,341 to finish second in the doubles event, for the Erie Community College men’s bowling team at the 40th annual National Junior College Athletic Association bowling tournament March 5-6 at Thruway Lanes. The men’s team finished third with a 14,161 total.

      The Level 5 girls from Greater Buffalo Gymnastics finished an impressive fourth place at the Niagara Cup. The competition included teams from all over the state. All seven girls are qualified to compete at the Level 5 state gymnastics meet in May.

      The Gleason’s School of Gymnastics hosted its 29th annual Niagara Cup Gymnastics meet last Friday through Sunday at Canisius College’s Koessler Center. Approximately 700 gymnasts from levels 4 through elite competed. Amherst resident Alexis Frankowski, a level 9 gymnast, competed Friday afternoon and placed 10th all-around with a high score of 35.225.

Bantam Lakers skate to second straight tie
      The Bantam Lakers had their second straight tie in the playoffs. The hard-fought game between the Lakers and Notre Dame Sunday, Feb. 28, ended 3-3. Mitch Miller (Justin Beck) started off the scoring late in the first. Dave Krasinski of Notre Dame wouldn’t let that lead stand when he scored with 1:05 left.

      Michigan State goaltender Alex Jackson earned his second playoff shutout while Lake Superior’s Kyle Flierl was nearly equally great, stopping all but two of Michigan State’s fusillade in a 2-0 Michigan victory.

Inferno scorches Nuggets in Amherst Girls Hockey
      The Inferno beat the Nuggets, 7-3, Sunday. The Inferno’s Paige Pautler (Alicia Oswald) opened the scoring. Allison Souter (Oswald) made it 2-0 but Madeline Marsack scored for the Nuggets. With 44 seconds left in the first, the Inferno’s Emily Beauchamp added to the score.

Mite Red Wings shuts out Stars
      Red Wing goaltender Ricky Pezzino was perfect in net once again, as he recorded his second consecutive shutout in a 5-0 shutout win over the Stars Sunday. A late first period goal from Michael Terranova (Kelly Dormer) started things off. Terranova (Jacob Ward) netted another early in the second.

     awards at the Patriots’ Cup Meet. Competing in the junior division of Level 9, Rachel Filipski took first all-around, placing first on beam (tie) and vault. Lily Szafranski took second on all-around (first on bars), Stephanie Mazur placed third all-around (first on floor) and Britani Nowak finished fourth all-around (tying for first on beam).

      The Amherst Pee Wee Minor “AA” hockey team claimed the WNYAHL championship with a convincing 5-0 win over Erie on Sunday at the Cheektowaga Town Rink. The victory came after two hard fought wins over Perinton, 1-0, and Cheektowaga, 2-1, that catapulted the Knights into the title game.

      The Amherst Knights ’98 Pee Wee Minor “AAA” hockey team beat the New Jersey Colonials, 7-2, in the championship game of the February Faceoff in Syracuse Feb. 14. The Knights, ranked eighth in the USA, played their best game of the year against the ninth-ranked Colonials. The Knights won the tournament last year as well.

Pee Wee Penguins come back for playoff triumph over Stars
      The Pee Wee Penguins, after falling behind 3-2, beat the Stars, 5-3, this past Saturday. The Penguins opened up with a 2-0 lead, with Trey Malcom scoring rebound goals from Zach Surowiec. The Stars, with a goal from Austin Ballard and two from Ben Lackner (Stephen Frost assists), took a 3-2 lead early in the third.

      The Pee Wee Bruins played their most complete game Saturday, winning their fourth playoff game, 5-0, over the White Sabres, After a scoreless first period, Dominic Caruso (Jake Fuzak) started off the second with a goal. The Bruins’ Ricky Bruno (Alexander Gervase) responded one minute later.

      The Penn State Lady Lions beat Minnesota, 21-17, to win the Amherst Youth Basketball fifth-sixth grade “B” division championship in a hard fought game Saturday.

Army defeats Holy Cross in third-grade boys ‘A’ final
      In an exciting game, Army (11-0) defeated Holy Cross, 18-13, Saturday to win AYB third-grade boys “A” championship. Joe Nusall led all scorers with 10 points and Grant Richards added six. Nick Maniscalco and Jacob Orlando had many rebounds, while Josh Dziama added four steals. Dylan Kelly, Jack Saia and Andrew Phillips played great defense for Army.

      The fifth-grade Christ The King Badgers took the first game of their league tournament with a 23-21 victory over cross-town rival St. Ben's. After a tightly contested first half, which found the two teams knotted at 10, the Tigers took a 17-15 lead going into the final quarter behind Nick MacDonald’s game-high eight points.

Lady Knights finish third in the state
      Although the girls did not accomplish their main goal, the 12U Lady Knights ended the season on a high note at the Tier I State Championships this past weekend, by going 2-0-2 (after an opening loss and which included another great game against their cross-town rival) to earn a third place finish in this years state tournament.

      The Amherst Soccer Association has two new members to its board of directors, Todd Loomis and Laurie Carra. Existing board member Scott Kinerk has accepted the position as Board President, replacing Rob Anderson, who remains on as Past President. Exiting board members are Shelly Bonaventura, Chuck Carra and Alan Lesse.

      The Casey Cougars Middle School seventh-eighth-grade extramural team finished 6-1. An impressive win over an undefeated Transit in the last game of the season forced a co-championship title. In a tough Williamsville league, exceptional sixth-graders were allowed to compete.

Xavier earns seventh-grade boys ‘A’ division
      Xavier defeated Massachusetts, 46-44, Saturday to win the seventh grade boys “A” division championship. Xavier led, 26-13, at halftime and, 35-20 at the end of the third quarter. Two players fouled out for Xavier, and Massachusetts stormed back with excellent foul-shooting and two three-pointers by Jeff Calderon.

Purdue claims fifth-sixth grade crown
      Ohio showed why they deserved to be in the Amherst Youth Basketball fifth-sixth grade girls championship but fell short against division leaders Ohio State, 28-19. Alexis Mulone led all scorers with 10 points. Clare Ahern illustrated why she was MVP of the league on both ends of the court.

Third-grade American needs OT to beat Navy
      American came back from an 18-10 deficit in the third quarter to beat Navy, 21-20, Saturday for the Amherst Youth Basketball third-grade boys championship in the White Division. American outscored Navy, 8-2, in the final four minutes to force overtime. American scored one point in overtime and held on.

      Christ The King’s sixth-grade boys beat St. Leo’s, 34-24, in St. Leo’s March Madness Tournament final. Joe Foster, Jamie Metzger, and William O’Connor had baskets to get CTK off to a great start. Trailing by eight, St. Leo’s Ethan Cottrell and Jordan Jones sank four shots to tie the game.
