Class A Far West Regional
      Williamsville South had beaten tons of teams this season by penetrating to the hoop and if that is covered, kicking it out for a three-point attempt. However, they never had to deal with a giant underneath the hoop.

Billies’ milestones set
      In arguably Williamsville South’s best boys basketball season ever, many milestones were reached. As a team, South set records for most wins in a season (19), consecutive wins (15), three-point attempts (567) and three-pointers made (197). They also won their first Section VI title since 1991 and advanced to the Far West Regional for the first time in school history.

East’s Allen places high at national track meet
      Williamsville East sophomore Kala Allen placed second in the 400-meter dash in 58 seconds, third in the 200-meter dash in 25.7 seconds and fifth in the 60-meter dash in 8.1 seconds at the GaREAT American Scholastic Indoor National Championships this past weekend in Geneva, Ohio.

South’s defense shuts down East in Class A final
      Williamsville South is known for its run-and-gun type offense, but it was their defense that allowed them to advance in the postseason. The Billies held East to 46 points in a 65-46 blowout win in the Section VI Class A overall final Tuesday, March 9, at Buffalo State College.

Lions Club to host 12th annual girls hoops all-star game
Amherst’s Smith, Sweet Home’s Smiley, South’s Marcus scheduled on rosters
      Forty-three of the area’s top senior girls basketball players will take to the court one final time March 27 as part of the 12th annual Cheektowaga Lions Club Senior High School Ladies Basketball Classic.

Churchville-Chili wins again; Sweet Home’s Lund breaks school record
New York State Powerlifting Championships
      For the fourth straight year, Churchville-Chili, a Section V school from Rochester, had the best powerlifters at the New York State Powerlifting Championships. Churchville-Chili won four weight divisions and team scoring with 55 points at the 39th installment of the event held on Saturday at Sweet Home.

Foul trouble dooms Sharks in Class A Catholic state final
      The last time Sacred Heart and St. Anthony’s of South Huntington met in a Catholic state girls basketball playoff game, the Sharks became the first Monsignor Martin Association team to win a Class AA playoff game. In the rematch, foul trouble plagued the Sharks.

East JV hockey wins title
      Williamsville East’s JV hockey team finished its season in style, capturing the Tonawanda Tournament by blanking the Ft. LeBeouf Bisons (Erie, Pa.), 2-0, Sunday at Brighton Arena. The Flames were undefeated throughout the tourney.

Pee Wee Rangers beat Red Wings in close playoff game
      The Pee Wee Rangers defeated the Red Wings, 4-3, in their fourth playoff game. The Red Wings opened the scoring on an unassisted goal by Brendan Quagliana. Ranger Hudson Milligan responded with two goals with assists from Max Tracy. Quagliana then scored twice to get his first hat trick of the season.

Penguins tie Bruins, earn trip to semifinals
      The Pee Wee Penguins played their best defensive game of the season, tying the Bruins, 2-2, this past Thursday. The game was scoreless until a breakaway goal by the Penguins’ Trey Malcom with three minutes left in the second period.

Mite Blackhawks heads to the final four
      The Mite Blackhawks outshot the Rangers for a 6-1 win in Sunday’s playoff game to lead them to the final four. Blackhawk Andrew Fairbrother opened the scoring in the first period and tallied twice. Joseph Amici, Joseph Steimle, Jack Manka and David O’Donoghue netted goals.

Squirt Blackhawks beat Red Wings
      The Squirt Blackhawks played an all-around complete game in defeating the Red Wings, 7-1, in playoff action Feb. 28. Daniel Baetzhold, Kaitlin Drew-Mead, Connor Obrien and Cam Smith were standouts on defense. Bryan Sokolowski scored four goals, as the Blackhawks took control in the second period. Also scoring were Nick LoTempio, Michael Zatkos and Drew-Mead.

      Bolstered by the brilliant play of netminder Bobby Popp, the Squirt Stars blanked the Flyers, 1-0, Saturday for their third straight playoff win.

      The most exciting time in the local bowling season quickly approaches. In the next two months, the top keglers in Western New York will take to the lanes to determine who really is the area’s best and roll for high prize money. And it’s a time of year that both excites and tires Bill Palumbo, manager of the Greater Buffalo USBC Association.

      The Amherst Squirt Minor “AAA” Knights (34-18-7) ended the season with a 5-3 win over the Wheatfield Blades in the Squirt Major WNYAHL championship game Sunday.

Bantam Lakers earn 3-1 victory over Princeton
      The Bantam Lakers pulled out a hard-fought 3-1 victory last Thursday against Princeton. Dennis Yelin (Bobby Stricko, Justin LaMonto) got the scoring rolling when, shorthanded, he went coast to coast and slammed one into the net. Kyle Flierl made some big stops that kept the game 1-0 until Yelin got his second by going coast to coast and deking through the defenseman.

Bisons even regular season record
      The Buffalo Bisons ended their regular season with a 5-1 win over Bud Bakewell Monday, evening their record at 13-13-2. Contributing to the Bison effort were David Hnat (two goals, assist), Brandon Fortuna (goal, assist), Ethan Crowley (two assists), Sam Stark (two assists), Noah Basehart (goal), Justin Bystrak (goal) and John Koerber (assist).

Freeze cool Inferno, 5-1
Amherst Girls Hockey
      The Freeze moved to the top spot in Amherst Girls Hockey 18U after dousing the Inferno, 5-1, Saturday. Madison Kather started off her hat trick by scoring two unassisted goals within the first four minutes of the game followed by Nell Meosky late in the second period.

East Amherst’s Rogowski wins Ithaca College football award
      East Amherst resident and Canisius graduate Andrew Rogowski was named the Ithaca College football team’s Outstanding Specialist for the second straight season. As a kicker, he earned first-team ECAC and Empire 8 honors and was a second-team pick to D3football.com’s East Region all-star team.

      Holly Johnson, a Cheektowaga native who formerly attended Amherst High School and plays softball for Rutgers, was named Big East Pitcher of the Week for the first time in her career. She appeared in four games and recorded two wins and a save at the USF Under Armour Invitational in Clearwater, Fla.

      The ECC Burt Flickinger Athletic Center will be the host site for the Carubba Collision Golden Gloves regional boxing tournament and the New York State Championship, which are scheduled to take place March 20, April 9 and April 23.

CCA girls win championship
      The Christian Central Academy eighth-grade girls basketball team defeated St. Christopher, 20-16, to win the North Town Silver Championship. Caroline Ranallo scored 12 points and blocked six shots. Sydney Malcolm scored six points, and along with Sydney Young and Daila Miller, helped shut down the St. Christopher offense with tenacious defense for the Crusaders.

Notre Dame wins AYB fifth-grade boys crown
      Notre Dame beat Villanova, 20-15, to capture the Amherst Youth Basketball fifth-grade title. Notre Dame’s balanced scoring helped seal the victory. Connor Kelly led with seven points while Matt Winkler added five. Ali Khadra had several rebounds and contributed four points. Sam Schatmeyer and Zac Neira also added two points.

      Niagara Gymnastics Level 6 gymnasts competed in the Lucky Stars Invitational held by Strop’s Gymnastics in Jamestown last Friday. Competing in the 7- to 9-year-old age division, Autumn Kelleher placed second on vault, third on uneven bars, fourth on balance beam and floor exercise, and second in all-around.

      Iona outlasted Marist, 25-20, in double overtime to win the AYB “B” girls seventh-eighth grade double-elimination tournament March 6. Leah Bellitto (six points), Rachel Favre (five) and Liz Drzewiecki (five) secured Iona a 10-point halftime lead.

Fordham earns seventh-grade boys South title
      Fordham’s Mike Shanahan scored eight of his 13 points in the first quarter to put the Rams ahead, 14-8. Chris Tideswell scored a team-high 17 points and Eric Duran scored 11 points. Dylan Lambert (nine points) and Chad Steinwachs (six points) led the Rams’ defense, while Luke Horigan had a monster game under the boards. Mitchel Perlstein played aggressively.

      The Christ the King fifth-grade Badgers used a tight defense and well-balanced scoring attack to defeat St. Amelia’s, 31-21, to win the CTK 33rd annual tourney Sunday. The Badgers took a 12-8 lead into halftime but broke it open in the second half behind the scoring of Cam Ciesielski, Tommy Gioia, Bo Stroud, Terrel Smith, and Mike O’Neill.

St. Benedict’s varsity boys finish second at Diocesan tourney
      The St. Benedict varsity boys basketball team lost in the finals of the Diocesan Tournament to St. Vincent de Paul of Elma 22-16, ending the Tigers’ bid to win a third straight Diocesan Championship. Colin Tenney led the Tigers with eight points and Patrick MacDonald added four but St. Ben’s couldn’t overcome the hot second half shooting of St. Vincent’s.

      The SS. Peter and Paul girls JV basketball team capped their season Friday evening with an impressive 24-10 win over Christ The King to take third place in the Holy Hoopsters League. The Knights stormed out to a 6-0 lead and never looked back.
